I'm a professional software engineer with a strong interest in dependable computing, particularly safety-critical computing. To quote a friend of mine who is a professor at UVa, "I only like to work on software systems that can kill people."
While a minor overstatement, I find that the challenges of dependable computing are quite compelling and, moreover, have the potential for significant social and economic impact as our lives become increasingly tied to computers (like it or not).
When I'm not tied to my computer (all day at work, most days), I like to be outside, doing something, usually with a camera on my hip. Staring at pixels all day adds to an appreciation of the (unsampled) beauty of the real world.
